OVERVIEW OF STUDIES IN YIP'S MONTESSORI EDUCATION

To help parents better understand what goes on at our school, we are listing here a brief description of the key components of our program:

    Practical Life Exercises

Practical life exercises are simply various kinds of daily domestic activities like cleaning the table, pouring water, cutting and pasting etc., but they are the fundamental building blocks for the construction of the Montessori method. The purpose of these activities is not just to master these tasks for their own sake. It is rather to aid the inner construction of discipline, organization, independence and self-esteem through concentration on a precise and completed cycle of work.

Practice Life Lesson consists of the following activities:

    - Care of person (personal care, dressing frames, grooming)
    - Care of environment (cleaning, polishing, care of plants)
    - Fine Motor Development (pouring, squeezing, twisting, hammering)
    - Gross Motor services
    - Grace and Courtesy

    Sensory Education

The first of the child's organ functioning is his/her senses. According to Dr. Montessori, education of the senses has, as its aim, the refinement of the differential perception of stimuli by means of repeated exercises. The sense exercises constitute a species of auto-education and lead to a perfecting of the child's psycho sensory processes.

Sensory education consists of the followings:

    - Auditory (hearing)
    - Visual (seeing)
    - Tactile (touching)
    - Olfactory (smelling)
    - Gustatory (tasting)

    Mathematics

Sensorial training is important in learning the basics of mathematics. We provide a large variety of sensorial materials to allow the child to familiarize him/herself with numbers at an early age. The idea of quantity exists in all the materials and the conception of identity and difference is built up from recognition of identical objects and gradation of similar ones.

Our mathematics program is organized as follows:

    Numeration: counting and recognition
    Decimal system: place values
Linear counting: teens, tens and 100 identification
Four operations: i) Static - addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division
ii) Dynamic - addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division

    Cultural Education

We provide cultural education to the children to help them to explore and understand the world they live in. We help them to learn to have a respect for different peoples and cultures.

Our program can be classified as follows:

Geography: To launch the child's exploration of the world's physical environment
Nature studies: To help the child to have a clear understanding of our natural environment such as plants, animals, water, air, etc
History: To help the child to understand the distinction as well as the relation between the past and the present

    Language Studies

Language is an integral part of our Montessori classroom, through encouragement of self-expression, lessons, and freedom of conversation. The following stages and activities will be introduced to the children as appropriate.

    • Stage 1

      TO DEVELOP LANGUAGE

To acquire language and to enrich vocabulary through various activities.

    • Stage 2

TO PREPARE THE MIND AND THE HAND

      - The Mind:

      > Listening to sounds, identifiying the sounds
      > Sorting objects and pictures according to initial, middle or final sounds.

      - The Hand:

      > Sandpaper letters corresponding to sounds
      > Drawing letters in the sand, back, blackboard, finger painting
      > Insets for design or metal insets

    • Stage 3

      TO COMPOSE AND WRITE

Using movable alphabet corresponding with pink, blue and green composing schemes to achieve the aims

    • Stage 4

TO READ AND TO UNDERSTAND MEANING
